STUART WEISBERG GAINS RECESS APPOINTMENT TO FEDERAL JOB SAFETY AND HEALTH REVIEW COMMISSION

President Clinton has announced his recess appointment of Stuart E. Weisberg as a Commissioner of the Federal Occupational Safety and Health Review Commission. As a recess appointee, Mr. Weisberg serves until the end of the next session of the Senate unless confirmed by the Senate to the full term that expires April 27, 2005.

Mr. Weisberg served as Chairman of the Review Commission from 1994 until his term as a Commissioner expired April 27, 1999. The Senate did not act on his renomination to a full six year term before it adjourned.  The Review Commission is the independent agency that functions like a court to resolve disagreements over job safety and health inspections conducted by a separate  agency, the U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration.

From 1984 to 1993, Mr. Weisberg served as staff director and chief counsel for the House Government Operations Subcommittee on Employment and Housing.  That panel had oversight on health and safety issues and held hearings on repetitive motion hazards in the workplace, the bloodborne virus standard, and the chemical process safety standard. Prior to that, he spent eight years as an attorney and later a supervisor for the National Labor Relations Board Office of General Counsel. Mr. Weisberg graduated from Brandeis University and received his law degree from the University of Pennsylvania Law School.

Mr. Weisberg and his wife Elizabeth have two sons, Andy, 12, and Eric, 10, and the family resides in Bethesda, MD.
