Personal Identification Verification (PIV) Status

Homeland Security Presidential Directive 12 (HSPD-12) states that it is “the policy of the United States to enhance security, increase Government efficiency, reduce identity fraud, and protect personal privacy by establishing a mandatory, Government-wide standard for secure and reliable forms of identification issued by the Federal Government to its employees and contractors (including contractor employees).” The overall goal of HSPD-12 is to achieve appropriate security assurance by verifying the identity of individuals seeking physical access to federally controlled government facilities and electronic access to government information systems.

Office of Management and Budget Memorandum M-07-06, issued on January 11, 2007, requires agencies to post on their federal agency public website a report on the number of PIV credentials issued. This posting will be updated quarterly.
