The United States Department of Labor, through its Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), conducted an investigation and ultimately issued1 a citation on February 9, 2021, alleging repeated2 violations of 29 C.F.R. §1910.147(c)(4)(ii) and 29 C.F.R. §1910.147(c)(4)(ii)(B), the control of hazardous energy (lockout/tagout or LOTO) standard under the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970 (the Act), 29 U.S.C. § 651-78. These regulations address the types of steps that must be included in an employer’s LOTO procedures.
