ALJ Decision in United States Postal Service, OSHRC Docket No. 17-0023, Directed for Review

On the afternoon of June 17, 2016, a city letter carrier for the United States Postal Service began to experience muscle cramps as he delivered mail on foot on his route for the Astrodome Post Office in Houston, Texas. The muscle cramps worsened as he neared the end of his route, but he managed to complete it. The carrier was unable to drive his van back to the post office so a Postal Service route examiner, who happened to be accompanying him that day to observe his route delivery, drove him there. When they arrived at the post office, a supervisor called 911. Emergency medical technicians responded to the call, administered IV fluids to the letter carrier, and transported him to the hospital, where he stayed for two nights. The carrier returned to work 9 days later.
